"The Xafyre Chronicles Part II: The Rise Of Emperor Var"
The Third Observation By Tales Of A Liquid Dawn
Story by Anthony Yip & Ben Plater
"Join me and be at my side as my Qu Le’Chi and we will take The Trial together."
- Quul Ya, to Var Xafyre
The Rise Of Emperor Var takes place some years before the story told in The Fall Of The Xafyre Empire and tells the story of a young Var Xafyre who grew up under the oppressive regime of the Fifth Command.
Fifth Command Drone Scans
The Fifth Command from the planet Ry’Fe rule over Cryess. The Fifth Command is presided over by General Loguen Baed who appoints the despicable Inspector Thyse to ensure the security of the Ixal Province. Terrifying automated drones scan the streets and slums of Xer, capital of Ixal Province. Perpetrators are caught and sent for processing.
A Thief’s Shame
The Xafyre family were once rulers of Cryess. This changed when the Fifth Command took control. As a child, Var Xafyre was smuggled out of Xafyre Palace to be raised as a commoner of the Xer slums. As a young man, Var lives the life of a petty thief. He knows that within his soul, he is destined for great things, yet exists in shame.
Neglect
Var knows he has ignored his calling for true greatness but feels powerless to act. This is until he attempts to steal Qunja High Monk Quul Ya’s cherished Qunja Blade, Quul Ya catches Var, but sees potential in the young man, for he knows Var’s true destiny as future emperor.
Qunja Teachings
Quul Ya takes Var under his wing and introduces him to the ways of the Qunja Monks, the lycrid vapours and how to attune the power of the mind and body. Together, Quul and Var form a strong friendship of trust and become a vigilante force, carrying out sabotage on Fifth Command troops and strongholds.
The Trial
Once every thousand years, a trial, the Arch Monk Trial, is put to the High Monk to become Arch High Monk, officially recognised as a Qunja Deity. The trial consists of venturing into the deepest lycrid cave, being subject to strongest vapours. Here, intense hallucinations are experienced as the challenger must face the true self and soul. Those who overcome are able to retrieve the densest nugget of lycrid crystal and bring it to the surface.
It is time for Quul Ya, Qunja High Monk to embark on his Trial. He is permitted to take one “Qu Le’Chi” or trusted companion to take the Trial with him - and so he chooses Var.
Quul and Var embark on the Trial where they see images of time-warping Gods. Beings able to traverse any point in time at will for eternity. Quul sees the key to this is through the Tome of History. Var experiences a temporary loss of the ego and self before recovering and seeing his own visions of leadership.
Quul passes his trial but the obsession with boundless power through the Tome sets in - he keeps his obsession secret, but young Var suspects something has changed in him.
To Fight Oppression
Over the years, Quul Ya and Var gain a following, along with the nomadic Xylaa Serpent Race and the Qunja Monks, they launch a massive offensive, managing to overthrow and banish the Fifth Command.
The once feared Inspector Thyse is brought to justice and publicly hanged. The Fifth Command ruler Loguen Baed can only look on as the flags fall and the Fifth Command structures crumble. Loguen remembers who he once was - a leader of a peaceful nation on the planet Ourobris, now renamed Ry’Fe, with good intentions. Evil had set in and, like a dark cancer, had eaten away over many years. He sees his own soldiers rounded up, some shot in the streets, others surrendered and vowing themselves to Var Xafyre. He sees the flames finally vanquished before taking his own life.
Var is made Ruler of the Xafyre Empire and ruler of Cryess, but instead of celebrating the victory, his now old friend Quul Ya disappears. It is suspected he has gone to seek the Tome of History and has been consumed within its magic pages.
Stolen Away With Time
Var meets a young woman named Froy Hyn and marries her. They have a son together, Pyot’r. Because of the ever-present dangers around his family, the Xylaa appoint two of their finest warriors to serve him - The Shield and The Spear.
With Quul Ya missing, the Qunja appoint Var as their honourable High Monk and agree to maintain and run the palace, building a great lycrid Chamber for him.
Quul Ya exists within the Tome Of History seeking the ultimate power - the power to control time itself.
